The Duke of Edinburgh unveils a plaque marking the restoration of the schooner Kathleen and May

The Cutty Sark Trust was formed from the National Maritime Trust, which The Duke of Edinburgh helped found to preserve historic vessels. The first ship acquired by the Maritime Trust in 1949 was the tea-clipper Cutty Sark; the trust later rescued boats such as the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's famous war ship. The Maritime Trust later became the Cutty Sark Trust, and the restoration of the Kathleen and May has become one of its most recent successes.
The Duke toured the Kathleen and May, signing the visitors' book in the captain's cabin. After unveiling a plaque to mark his visit, His Royal Highness met some of the many volunteers who worked on the restoration project and congratulated them on their success.
